Reducing methadone dosage must always be done under close medical supervision through your opioid treatment program (OTP). Never attempt to adjust your dose on your own, as this could lead to serious complications or withdrawal symptoms.

Your healthcare team will create a personalized tapering plan that gradually reduces your dose over several weeks while monitoring your response. This slow approach helps minimize withdrawal symptoms and maintains stability in your recovery. During dose reduction, watch for these important signs:

β€’ Withdrawal symptoms
β€’ Changes in cravings
β€’ Difficulty breathing
β€’ Dizziness
β€’ Confusion
β€’ Unusual effects

If you experience any of these symptoms, immediately communicate with your healthcare provider. They may need to adjust your tapering schedule or provide additional support to ensure your safety and comfort during the reduction process.

My clinic just allows us to up and down dose how we choose always get the same response your clinic will carefully monitor you..... I have had to me my own plan I was here prior and they let me ride my way all the way up to 200mgs daily did peak n trough and told me I needed 300 when I complained I couldn't keep my eyes open at 200 now go to 300???? I dosed down again on my own accord. So it's easy to say but not all doctors not all clinics do what their supposed to so that's why I'm on here asking how to decrease my dose on my own. Help

Props to you for reaching out and asking for advice. The whole purpose of getting on methadone maintenance was to rid myself of this dependence. Now I'm just as scared to come off methadone that was to stop using heroin. And the professionals are supposed to be ones with the answer and the help for this. The only thing I've been helped with is the dependence of using a illegal street drug and needle. I just want to be free if this horrible need to feel like a normal person every single day.
