Where can methadone be obtained for opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment?

Methadone for OUD can only be dispensed at specially certified opioid treatment programs (OTPs) — not through a regular doctor's office or pharmacy. It's a Schedule II controlled substance, so it requires a prescription and close medical supervision.

It most commonly comes as an oral liquid taken daily, though tablet form is sometimes available. Either way, the source is the same: a certified clinic. Here's how to find a certified clinic near you:

- Visit findtreatment.gov to search for treatment centers
- Search by state on the SAMHSA website (samhsa.gov)
- Call the American Addiction Centers helpline at (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators)
- Talk to a primary care physician or addiction specialist for personalized recommendations

When choosing a clinic, make sure it is SAMHSA-accredited and DEA-registered — only these certified programs are legally allowed to dispense methadone for OUD treatment.

Early in treatment, visits to the clinic are often frequent (sometimes daily). Over time, and with demonstrated stability, some people may qualify for take-home doses. Since 2024, doctors have more flexibility in approving take-home doses, which is good news for many people in treatment.

Mine are for chronic pain and a prescription from my Dr. I pick it up at my local pharmacy. This is low dose methadone if 5 mg tablets.
