OPIOID AGONIST
Overview
Methadose is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the detoxification and maintenance treatment of opioid addiction, including heroin and other morphine-like drugs. It comes in two formulations, Methadose and Methadose Dispersible. These medications must be dispensed only through certified opioid treatment programs and used alongside appropriate social and medical services. Methadose is also known by its drug name, methadone hydrochloride.
Methadose belongs to the opioid agonist drug category. It works by activating opioid receptors in the brain to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings, helping those taking it stabilize and prevent relapse to illicit opioid use.
How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Methadose is taken orally. Methadose Dispersible tablets are dissolved in liquid before administration, while the oral concentrate is measured and swallowed as a liquid. Initial treatment typically begins with a single dose to suppress withdrawal symptoms. Daily maintenance doses vary from person to person. Methadose should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider, and abrupt discontinuation should be avoided in individuals who are physically dependent.
Side effects
Common side effects include lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, vomiting, and sweating.
Rare but serious side effects may include life-threatening respiratory depression, especially during dose initiation or increases; QT interval prolongation causing serious heart arrhythmias (torsades de pointes); neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome in newborns exposed to opioids during pregnancy; serotonin syndrome, a potentially fatal reaction caused by certain drug interactions; adrenal insufficiency (reduced hormone production); severe low blood pressure; and risks related to head injury or increased intracranial pressure. Accidental ingestion, especially by children, can result in fatal overdose.
